2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Price: $68.450–$76.850

Overview

Mercedes-Benz's E-class sedan is far more than a manageably sized take on the range-topping S-class. It's a wonderfully complete, highly desirable, top-class luxury car in its own right. Its smaller size and lower weight imbue it with satisfying athleticism without resorting to expensive chassis tech. That said, things like an air suspension are available, ramping up comfort while maintaining the option for back-road fun. Two powertrains are offered—the E350's 255-hp four and the E450's 375-hp inline-six. They're smooth and smoother.

Inside, luxury abounds. Dazzling screens mingle with high-quality materials, and everything looks and feels fabulous. The E-class made our 2026 10Best list for many reasons, chief among them its ability to balance old-school luxury with creamy powertrains, sublime driving dynamics, and the latest tech.

Expert Tip: If you need a little more zest, look to the 604-hp Mercedes-AMG E53 plug-in hybrid, which we review separately.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Engines: 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 375-hp 3.0-liter inline-six
Transmission: 9-speed automatic
Drivetrains: rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive

Under the E350's hood, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pairs with a 23-hp electric motor. All-wheel drive is optional on this model and standard on all other E-classes. The E450 gets a similar hybrid setup for its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which brings the total to 375 horsepower. The hybrid systems are said to both reduce turbo lag at low engine speeds and smooth the operation of the auto start/stop system.

In our test of the new E-class, we found both powertrains deliver their oomph smoothly and quietly. The four-cylinder E350 is plenty quick, but the E450 is even quicker, and its inline-six is a particularly sweet-sounding and potent engine. An adjustable air suspension is optional and replaces the steel-spring arrangement that comes standard, but both setups provide impeccable ride quality and handling that invites back-road play. A rear-wheel-steering system is also available to improve maneuverability in tight spaces.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Unsurprisingly, the E-class's cabin is focused on comfort and upscale accommodations. Passenger space is generous, and the interior is offered with rich-looking materials such as carefully stitched leather upholstery and handsomely wrought metal trim—though many of the nicest materials are optional. Overall, the design is high-end and nicely complements the car's handsome exterior styling.

Second Row: The E-class's rear seat is particularly roomy, with excellent legroom and generous headroom that allows the taller of the species to ride comfortably.

Cargo Capacity: Cargo capacity is limited at 12.7 cubic feet, which is small for the class. By comparison, the BMW 5-series can hold 18.4 cubes. The E-class All-Terrain wagon, which we review separately, can accommodate 21.7 cubic feet of stuff.
